Explore our blog for insightful musings and observations as RSL champions community well-being through sports, leisure, and recreation across Aotearoa.
Strengthening Our Sector Through Shared Knowledge
My mum sent me a nice message of support before RSL embarked on a busy week last week. Her wise words were “sharing knowledge is one of the most powerful things we can do”. As a 100% New Zealand owned and operated company, RSL love learning and sharing and was chuffed to be able to sponsor the Recreation Aotearoa | Te Whai Oranga Recreation Summit and sponsor and support the development of the Master Class.
Reimagining Spaces: What Europe Can Teach Us About Repurposing Facilities
Transforming facilities from one purpose to another is commonplace in some countries. In most cases in New Zealand, we do this re-purposing because it is identified as the quickest and cheapest option to increase supply in a network (think warehouse to indoor courts). In other countries, heritage preservation and reducing carbon emissions are also overt drivers of re-purposing.
The Power of Connection: Learning From Our Sector, Here and Abroad
There is something special about our sector. The willingness for people to come together and share knowledge helps us all learn and grow. This was my last appointment of a couple of weeks of exploration, and it did not disappoint.
Global Inspiration, Local Pride: Highlights from the IAKS 2025 Congress in Cologne
It felt a little bit like the first day at high school, with nerves of anticipation. Attending the IAKS 2025 Congress in Cologne was always going to be full of excitement and so far it has kept me buzzing.
Pedals, Planning, and Play: My DIY Field Trip Before IAKS 2025
What do you do when the field trip is cancelled due to low numbers? Easy, you create a field trip yourself. In this instance I got to combine two of my most favourite things; 1. Checking our facilities and all things planning, while 2. On a bicycle – the perfect combo.
Championing the Power of Recreation: See You at the Te Whai Oranga Summit
The value that recreation brings to individuals / whānau and the wider community has never been more important. If you are a Recreation Professional, then you are an important leader in your community, and I hope to see you at the Recreation Aotearoa | Te Whai Oranga Summit and Master Class.
Fun Sports For All Ages
Call me old school, but I love reading our local community paper, and this page brought a smile to my face (photo attached). The entire page focused on women and girls playing sport.
Waiuta: How Sport and Recreation Built a Community That Still Echoes Today
Communities evolve and change, some more quickly than others. However a common thread through change appears to be the need for connection and belonging; something recreation and sport can deliver so well on.
Investing Beyond the Now: Building Recreation for Future Generations
In this age of economic austerity, where some leaders are saying we need to focus only on roads and rubbish, this article from Bryce highlights the need to think differently when it comes to your strategy for investment in projects.
This article intercepts some thinking I've been doing recently about inter-generational investment. More education needs to be given about how an investment in projects now is often for the benefit for multiple generations; many whom have not even been born. We can only kick the can down the road for so long...and it may take different investment strategies to get things done.
Frosty Morning, Warm Connections: Canterbury's Rec Sector Comes Together
The power of people coming together; whether it is meeting for the first time, or reacquainting; this is the value of networking. It was great to see a good turnout in Christchurch for the Canterbury Region Recreation Aotearoa | Te Whai Oranga networking breakfast. As a sector that focusses on people, it's more important than ever before to continue to connect, share and support each other.
Mothers Day With A Spade
You've got to love a good working bee. 🐝 On Sunday we had the opportunity to participate in a community planting day. A new bike skills area has been developed; a partnership between Environment Canterbury and our local cycling club.
Old Buildings, New Purpose: Lessons from Temuka
On recent travels I came across this gem. In a previous life it was a supermarket. In 1997 the Timaru District Council repurposed the building to become the Temuka Library and Service Centre. Retrofitting old spaces and giving them a new life is far from a new concept, and is an option that needs to be considered more when developing community facilities.
The Frog Pond: A Glimpse into Community History
Does history become more interesting as we age? Or is that just me? On a recent trip to the West Coast, we stopped at the Historic Kumara Baths site. We have driven by this site many times before. Well, it was worth the extra five minutes added to our travel – in fact it was utterly rewarding.
Celebrating 40 Years of Community at Lake Kaniere
The social cohesion benefits of sport, recreation and community (much of which cannot be monetised or quantified) are alive and well in New Zealand. This was apparent at the Lake Kaniere Triathlon in the weekend on the West Coast. Attending as a supporter for my daughter offered a chance to observe things from the relative comfort of my proverbial armchair.
Dora Greenwood: A Pioneer for Play
Theodora Greenwood – ahead of her time as a play advocate? Walking along the foreshore in Eastbourne recently, I came across Greenwood Park and the plaque in the photo. I was instantly intrigued and read the interpretive board alongside it (you just have to love a good interp board).
Lessons from the Road: Reflections from Conference Week
National Recreation Conference was held last week. I always love conference week as people come together to discuss relevant topics, network and reflect on the year that has been. This year I presented on lessons learned biking down the spine of North America. It was an opportunity to share the value of adventure to everyone in the room. We also unpacked some of the critical factors from ultra-endurance events that can be applied to every day life…
See You at RA Conference 2025!
Looking forward to having a conversation with Recreation Aotearoa National Conference Attendees in November. I'm fortunate enough to have been selected to talk to the conference on the lessons to be learned from ultra-distance events that can be applied in our everyday lives.
Back at Cooks Gardens: Where Inspiration Began
It is great to be back at Cooks Gardens in Whanganui today; a place very close to my heart. Growing up I was brought here on summer evenings with my father and his friend (Mr Kos, my first football coach) to watch shared Athletics / Cycling meets. These were spell-binding for me. At that time the cycle track was asphalt, on the outside of the 400m grass running track.
Standing Up for Community Wellbeing
The recent speech by the Prime Minister for Local Government to get back to the basics really troubled me. This post isn’t a political position; rather a nod to the importance of the role NZ territorial authorities play in the well-being of our communities. I do not usually comment on political speeches, but to hear a PM say local government is involved in “a laundry-list of distractions and experiments” is just poor form.
A Visit to Vivo in Calgary
I was very lucky to visit the Vivo for Healthier Generations Center in Calgary today www.vivo.ca. Just wow. Thank you so much to Cynthia Watson for taking time out of your busy schedule to show this kiwi around. I look forward to hosting you when you come down under.
