West Coast Sport and Active Recreation Spaces and Places Strategy

Date: June 2019 – June 2020
Client: Sport Canterbury

Project Description

The West Coast Spaces and Spaces Plan was developed to understand the future requirements for sport and recreation facilities in the area. The West Coast area has a wide range of facilities, many of which are ageing or have served communities that have changed.

RSL’s Role

This strategy took a “hierarchy” approach to determining what facilities are capable of providing for region-wide, district or community-level participation or competitions. The strategy also identified key principles to consider when proponents are seeking support for changes to the network of facilities.

Project Outcome

This strategy highlighted that there is generally a good supply of spaces and places. The key challenges were ensuring these are of an acceptable quality and they are sustainable. This strategy does not recommend the development of a large number of new facilities, instead the focus is on maintaining f it-for-purpose spaces and places for the community. It also identified that co-ordination between facilities and user groups and the communication of opportunities are important to maximise utilisation.
