Taranaki Aquatic Facilities Network Plan
Date: March 2024 – February 2025
Client: Sport Taranaki
Project Description
The Taranaki Aquatic Facility Network Plan aims to understand the current and future demand and supply of aquatic facilities in the region and make recommendations to ensure the network of facilities is fit for purpose.
The Network Plan considered the provision of all aquatic facilities across the three Taranaki Council areas, including, but not limited to, learn to swim (all ages), competitive swimming and aquatic recreation and sport needs across the region.
RSL’s Role
The Network Plan identified all aquatic facilities in the Taranaki region that are available for community or school use and took both a regional and district-by-district approach in assessing the amount and type of water space available for communities.
The Network Plan utilised recently developed guidance from the Sport New Zealand Aquatic Facilities Strategy to provide direction around the amount and types of pool space that people desire, and compared this with what the current network of aquatic facilities provides. The Network Plan also provided case studies to illustrate some of the challenges and opportunities in the region.
Project Outcome
The Network Plan identified district-level differences and offered both region-wide and district-level recommendations to address any imbalance in the supply of pools.
